A retina specialist is a medical doctor who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases involving the retina and vitreous. Dr Pandya completed 14 years of education to become a board-certified Ophthalmologist and Retina Specialist. This includes:

Undergraduate College – 4 years
Medical School – 4 years
Medical Internship – 1 year
Ophthalmic Surgery Residency – 3 years
Surgical Vitreoretinal Fellowship – 2 years

Dr Pandya refers to the Retina as “The Engine of the Eye”. Just like a car requires an engine to work, the eye cannot function fully without an intact and healthy Retina. The Retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. The Retina absorbs light which is transmitted, via the optic nerve, to the brain. The brain then creates the images that we visualize. The Macula is the center of the Retina and this thickness is 1/6 of a human hair.

Flashing lights (“Sometimes I see a streak of lighting in my peripheral vision”)
Floaters (“I’m seeing cobwebs in my vision”)
Distorted vision (“Everything looks crooked and wavy when I read)
Peripheral vision loss (“It looks like there is a shadow in the side of my vision”)
Total loss of vision (“Doctor, I cant see my fingers clearly”)

As we get older, the Vitreous jelly (which supports the Retina) can become liquified and start to separate. As the Vitreous jelly separates, these tiny pieces cast a shadow on the Retina and we can see floaters or specks in our vision. This doesn’t only happen with age, but can happen following eye trauma, inflammation or if you are nearsighted (i.e. Myopic).

Floaters can be the signs of Retinal damage, specifically a Retinal Tear or Retinal Detachment. It is very important to have this evaluated by a Retina Specialist. You don’t have to live with your floaters. Please contact us to schedule an evaluation.

Overall, your vision health can be enhanced with certain daily habits:

Avoiding smoking (and all tobacco products)
Healthy diet (avoiding meat/dairy)
30 minutes of exercise daily
Wearing UV protection sunglasses
Regular eye exams
